Those dark elves who enjoy the blessing of the Goddess are blessed with indefinitely long lifespans, beyond even those of their cousins in the realms above. Nevertheless, indefinitely long does not mean infinite or eternal.

The long lust is the sword of Damocles ever hanging above the head of each and every one of the Goddess’s beloved daughters. Left unchecked, it will grow into unquenchable sexual appetite and madness.

It is for this reason that practices such as the baptism are so important. The young must be prepared for the torrents of desire they will endure throughout their life. Their body and spirit must be tempered, attuned to the sacred rhythm of lust, so that it may be endured and commanded and not succumb to it.

Yet the ceremony is no mere formality. The long lust does not always remain obedient. On occasion, a candidate will falter, overtaken by the very fires she was meant to master. Such girls are lost to the world, trapped within insatiable craving, reliant upon constant care and the ministrations of many lovers to sate their relentless hunger.

The priestesses speak of these failures only in whispers, for the consequences are grave and the truth well-guarded. And even for those who survive the rite, the long lust grows ever more potent with age and power, a temptation that must be mastered anew with every decade, lest the Goddess’s gift become her curse.

Whether any priestess or matron has ever fully succumbed to the long lust and what becomes of her thereafter remains a secret known only to the Ruling Council. Some claim it is a mystery yet unsolved; others, that it is a horror carefully concealed, for the telling would shake even the strongest among the Goddess’s devotees.
